Internship Criteria

Oxford Saïd MBA students can choose to do a credited or a non-credited internship. As the name would suggest, students who opt for the 'for credit' option need to follow certain criteria to ensure they gain their credits.

Internships for Credit (IFC) must meet the following criteria:

  • Students must work on a full-time basis (min 30 hours per week).
  • Students must have regular interaction with senior and / or executive management
  • The work undertaken must be substantive – the internship should provide an opportunity for students to make an active contribution to company initiatives
  • It must be for an organisation where MBA learning can be applied objectively (the student is required to write a report following the internship demonstrating they have applied their MBA learning)
  • Ideally, the internship needs to start between 1 - 14 July 2024
  • It must be for a minimum of six weeks*
  • * There is no final date by when an internship should end, but consideration must be given to the fact that students need to submit an assignment based on their Internship for Credit by the end of August 2024. If the internship lasts beyond this date, there should be an explicit recognition (either in the contract or the job description) that the work they do before then provides scope to produce an assignment in time for submission.

    How to hire an intern

If you have a clear idea or have a job description of what the intern will do, send this over to us, and we can publicise to the students on our job portal. If you are unsure of the exact responsibilities at this time, please speak with us for further guidance.

Once you have a clear job description, students can then apply through our job portal, which can be linked directly to your email or Applicant Tracking System (ATS). If the student wishes to use the internship for credit towards their MBA, they will need to check that the internship meets the published criteria and provide a signed contract and job description to the Projects Office by 27 May 2024 at the latest.

You can advertise non-credited internships to our students and alumni throughout the year by posting on OSCAR or speaking directly with us. If the student does not wish to use the internship for credit, the internship does not have to meet the published criteria.

    FAQs

Can we hire students permanently following the internship?

    • Yes, many students who undertake internships are looking for permanent roles upon graduation. Please note: visa sponsorship may be required for some students following the internship

Do we have to pay the interns?

    • There is no requirement to pay the interns, but we would advise that you do to aid in attracting applications. Salaries for internships vary dramatically, from simply covering expenses, to paying a pro rata full time wage of circa £70,000. Speak with us for further guidance

We want to offer a 'for credit' internship, but we need this to start in May/June. Is this possible?

  • This could be possible as we have some flexibility around start dates. We would advise you speak with us to see if we can accommodate your requirements
  • We are thinking of an internship once the students finish for a longer period of time. Can this work?

    • Yes, we have many employers who offer 3 - 12 month internships post-MBA. Get in touch to discuss this with us

Do I have to sponsor the student's visa while on the internship?

    • If your internship is based in the UK and will be 'for credit' all of our MBAs will have a visa that covers them to work during this time. The majority of students who are with us on a visa will have permission to work until March 2024 - please note that work hours restrictions may be in place for non-credited internships during term time
